On April 7, 2022, Prof. Emre Çıtak Lecturer Assoc. Dr. from the International Relations Department of the Hitit University gave a seminar titled “Online Radicalization and Terrorism”
Emre Çıtak told that radicalization and terrorism have become one of globalizing concepts as a result of the massive progress and development of mass media and digital technologies these days. The concept has also been politicized after the 9/11terrosrist attacks. Although Extremism and Radicalization are different things, the terms are often used interchangeably. According to Emre Çıtak in many cases, alienation and social exclusion are often the real factors that stand behind radicalization.
Hence, it is mainly a socialization process that is offered by terrorist organizations to people engaged in new terrorist groups group and the dynamics of the process is more important than ideology. The Internet has become a good environment for terrorist groups firstly because it allows reaching practically anybody regardless of geographical distance. Secondly, the internet implies anonymity for its users and allows radical ideas to spread quickly throughout the world. The seminar ended with the participants conveying their various thoughts on the subject and a question-answer session.
